What is the Atkins Diet?

The Atkins diet is a phased low-carbohydrate eating plan developed by Dr Robert Atkins. It starts with a very strict induction phase (20g net carbs/day) and gradually reintroduces carbs over four phases. The goal is to find your personal carb tolerance while maintaining a healthy weight.

Key Principles

  • Phase 1 (Induction): Under 20g net carbs/day — very strict
  • Phase 2 (Balancing): Slowly add nuts, seeds, and low-carb veg
  • Phase 3 (Fine-tuning): Reintroduce fruits, legumes, and whole grains
  • Phase 4 (Maintenance): Find your personal carb tolerance for life
  • Protein is unrestricted; fat is a primary fuel source
