What is the Alkaline Diet?

The alkaline diet is based on the idea that certain foods influence the body's pH balance. Foods are categorised as acid-forming or alkaline-forming after digestion. While the body tightly regulates blood pH on its own, the diet naturally emphasises whole plant foods, reduces processed foods, and limits meat and dairy.

Key Principles

  • Emphasise alkaline-forming foods: most fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes
  • Limit acid-forming foods: meat, dairy, grains, alcohol, caffeine
  • Avoid sugar, processed foods, and refined carbs
  • Drink plenty of water (room temperature or warm)
  • The diet is largely plant-based with some flexibility
